My Top 5 Favourite Moments As A Dad.....So Far

Over the years I have had several jobs. I have worked in a stationary shop, ran a café, ran a pub, been a teacher in adult education, worked in a hotel on Long Island, New York and I currently work as a support worker for people with learning difficulties and social difficulties. It is a great job and I enjoy what I do...but if I was to be totally honest it isn't my favourite job. No, my favourite job, as clichéd as it sounds, is being a Dad!

Being a Dad is an awesome job! Sure, it is difficult at times and can really be quite testing but it is also great fun and enjoyable. Being a Dad to twins is even better as I instantly got double the love (and double the trouble). They are now 6 years old and there are so many things I have loved about the journey so far. In this post, however, I am going to list my Top 5 favourite moments as a Dad so far...

1: The Day They Were Born

Naturally this was going to be number one. The day they were born was such a surreal day but a day that I will never forget. We had a planned C-Section so we knew the date they were going to be born which, in itself, was quite bizarre as there was no anticipation for labour. Kate did an amazing job carrying and cooking the twins as she got right up to 37 weeks and 5 days. Ruby was first out of the sunroof and she weighed an impressive 7lb. Next was Poppy and she weighed an even more impressive 7lb 2. That's over a stone of baby inside her belly. Amazing! I have heard so many people say there is nothing quite like that moment when you first meet your child and the love that you have for them that just appears out of nowhere. They were all so true! I was instantly in love with them and more in love with Kate than ever before. An amazing moment and the very start of my journey as a Dad.

2: Their First Birthday

Sure, there were hundreds of moments between them being born and their first birthday but I think they maybe deserve a post of their own. So I am jumping ahead to their first birthday which was an awesome day. Kate is from a pretty big family and we have lots of friends with kids of a similar age so we decided to have an "open house" birthday party for them. It was a long day and I think I must have made over a hundred cups of tea and coffee. But it was so much fun. The twins were on form and full of smiles and laughs and toddling about being cute as can be. But the moment that I remember best is when they had their cake. We sat them on the rug in the living room and after singing "Happy Birthday" we let them have a huge slice each. It was a big, fat chocolate cake  and they got it everywhere. It was all over their clothes, their faces, their hands and all over the rug. And in a total moment of ruthlessness I just rolled the rug up, put it in the bin and bought a new one. Good times.

3: Tara's Inn

My favourite place in the whole wide world is the fishing village of Port Jefferson on Long Island, New York. I have been there many times throughout my life as I have family who live there. When I was 18 I went there for 9 months and worked in a hotel which was one of the best experiences of my life. Naturally I wanted to take the twins there to see my family and we decided to do this when they were 18 months old (mainly so we didn't have to pay for them and save a grand on flights). It was a long, long day travelling from Newcastle to Manchester then from Manchester to Newark Airport which is in New Jersey. We then had to get the hire car and drive through New York City and down to Long Island. The twins were amazingly well behaved throughout the entire thing and when we landed at my Aunt's house we were starving. So we went to my favourite restaurant in the entire world....Tara's Inn. Tara's is an Irish bar that initially can seem a bit of a dive. The menu is written on paper plates and stapled to the wall and it is dark and plays loud rock music all day long and most of the customers are (extremely friendly) bikers. But the food is top notch! Their chicken wings are the best I have ever had in the world! Tara's is not the kind of place that children frequent very often so when we went in with these two ridiculously gorgeous, blonde twins it was like celebrities had entered. We received lovely comments from everybody in the bar and the twins lapped up the attention and the atmosphere. They were on form rocking out to the music, laughing and thoroughly enjoying their food almost as much as I did. A great moment being able to take them to my favourite restaurant in my favourite place and the first time they met their Great Aunt and Great Uncle.

4: Their Third Birthday

When the twins turned three we decided that we would do something special. The main reason was that we knew this would be the last birthday they had where we could do something on the day if it fell on a weekday. From their next birthday onwards we'd be restricted by the school calendar. We took them out of nursery for the day, booked train tickets to Edinburgh and booked tickets for the zoo. We took them on the train, which they absolutely loved, and we gave them their first Disney Princess doll each. We went to the zoo, which was great, and then to the Hard Rock Café for dinner. We then got the train home and watched Tom and Jerry cartoons on the tablet on the way home. It was a great day, great fun and a day that I will remember forever as one of the best family days we have had.

5: Reading Their First Book

I am a firm believer in reading to your kids. I have read to the twins since the day they were born. It has been part of our bedtime ritual from the very beginning and is still something that we do together every day. But now I very rarely get to read to them as they tend to read to me instead. Watching them learn how to read was a fascinating process and I was proud as punch at how quickly they grasped it. When they went into FSU and started bringing books and they would read them to me it was an amazing moment and one I won't forget.

And that is that - my 5 favourite moments so far as a Dad. To be fair when I started writing stuff down I had about a hundred moments so these are just 5 that I have selected. I have no doubt that there will a future post about another 5 favourite moments.

And on that note I will sign off

Until next time...

Me And My Dad: Reading

Me and My Dad: 3: Reading My Dad is an avid reader! He always has at least one book on the go but more often than not he will have about ten! He buys books, he borrows books off friends, he borrows them from the library, he downloads them on his Kindle...he will read a book in any format. Naturally because of that, I too am an avid reader (although these days I don't read as much as I used to). I love to get myself lost in a good story and I don't particularly have a genre that I prefer. I like a good thriller, a scary horror, a mystery, an adventure, fantasy and even the occasional piece of "chick-lit" (I like Sophie Kinsella books...she is pretty funny). These are five books that I associate with my Dad, all for different reasons. 1: Well Done Noddy by Enid Blyton My brother was a big fan of the "Noddy" books so we had lots in the house growing up. As I was younger than him, they were passed down to me. My Dad would often read me &

"What Did You Think Of.....The Boss Baby"?

For our latest review The Twiglets and I have reviewed "The Boss Baby". We went to see this at the local Odeon on "Kids Club" on the first day of the Summer Holidays. We took my Dad to see it too as he secretly loves a cartoon. Here are our thoughts...   The Boss Baby     WARNING: COULD CONTAIN SPOILERS     Describe "The Boss Baby" in a nut shell:   Ruby: A boy gets a baby brother who is the Boss Baby. They don't like each other. Then they do.   Poppy: The little boy doesn't like it when the Boss Baby comes to his house but then they become friends.   Me:  I could describe this in two ways:   1) On The Surface - This is essentially what the twins said. A boy gets a new little brother who is the Boss Baby and they don't get along. Then they do get along as they have to team up to save their parents from disaster.   2) Beneath The Surface - For a kids cartoon this is pretty complex. Tim's parents get a ne

"Grandma...Can We Have A Sleepover?"

When you find out you are having a baby it is a surreal feeling. When you find out that you are having two at the same time it is even more surreal!! We found out, like most parents, at our 12 week scan and once we had told our family and close friends we announced it to the world via Facebook. We received mainly positive reactions from everybody as most people would write comments like: " That is amazing news " or " Congratulations. So happy for you both " or " Double the babies means double the love " And so on. But there were the odd comments we received that I chose to ignore at first but I didn't forget them and they pondered in my mind for months on end. They were the comments like: " Say goodbye to ever sleeping again " and " Prepare to never have any money for the rest of your life. Babies are expensive and two at once is even more expensive " and " My friend has twins and he had a nervous breakdown when t
